[CEATEC 2008] I don’t know if you remember that PS2 train-simulation game called Train Simulator Real (see video), but this is kind of like that, except that Fujitsu is using 1080p real-world footage instead of 3D graphics. It is meant to be realistic enough to train drivers, but it can also be used for educational purposes in places like museums. The novelty is that this is a web application. Yes, they can deliver 1080p at 60fps and sell this train simulator as a SaaS (software as a service). Of course, something that is “on rail” like a train simulator is ideal for this type of video-streaming application. I doubt that it is as fun as the PS2 video-game, but in terms of simulation, this is as close as you can get from driving the real thing.
Honda is currently developing a gas-electric motorcycle that will rely on a hybrid drivetrain, and this model might even hit showrooms within a couple of years time. Not much information is available concerning this Honda hybrid, but it will apparently be available in displacements ranging from a mere 50cc all the way to 1,000cc, with a 50% improvement in fuel economy - definitely a plus point in anybody's books considering the ever rising costs of fuel. Hopefully this technology will also be transferred into hybrid cars in the future. Unless you're a performance nut who is willing to sacrifice a little bit of the environment for your enjoyment, hybrid vehicles look set to take over the future.

Not only does the UV Intensity Bikini help display your delectable hourglass figure to all and sundry on a bright, sunny day at the beach, it also comes with purple beads that function as a UV level indicator, letting you know exactly when you have enough sun. [CEATEC 2008] This is a trend: televisions are doing more and more processing and JVC’s 2D to 3D (stereo) conversion is yet another example of what can be done, in real-time, with videos. JVC was showing how it can convert 2D video into 3D stereo that works with (passive) polarized glasses. The demo was quite impressive: the stereo animation was crisp and didn’t exhibit too much flickering. There was some issues with the caption, but that was to be expected as JVC can’t really extract any depth information from 2D text in overlay on the video. I don’t know if that would “just work” for all video sources, but this was worth looking at. Note that JVC is using a left/right (eye) image separation that I’ve never seen before. When watching without the glasses, it doesn’t look like standard stereo video (look at the photo gallery)…

[CEATEC 2008] I had heard about this mobile internet device (MID) back in April, but all we had then was paper marketing materials. I’m glad to see this MID in the flesh plastic. The device is supposed to have an extension in the back (wired Ethernet+GPS+40GB HDD), but this was not shown on the show floor. However, even without the extension, this device has respectable specifications:
The battery life is unknown and the lack of keyboard kind of kills it for me, but may be others won’t mind using the stylus with the touch-display. I don’t know what the price is, but here is the European distributor site (with more technical info too!)

Here is yet another e-book reader to add to your radar - the Astak EZ Reader. Out later this November, the EZ Reader boasts to being the lightest, smallest and thinnest e-book reader in North America to date, so I'll be looking forward to its release with eager anticipation. Tipping the scales at just 7.8 ounces and measuring 7.2" x 4.7" x 0.4", the EZ Reader relies on e-ink and e-paper to display text and images, ensuring your eyesight is protected even if you're into long hours of electronic reader. The display itself doesn't consume any power while you read, and it uses a wee bit of juice to function until you decide to turn the page. A single charge is good enough to last for up to 8,000 page flips. I wouldn't get this when it is released though, since a Plus version will be out next year with Wi-Fi connectivity, while a Pro version includes Wi-Fi as well as a touch screen display.

Toyota has come up with the first rear-window curtain shield airbag in the world, specially designed to protect the heads of back seat passengers should there be a rear-end collision. It will first make an appearance in the Toyota iQ ultra-compact four-seater which will be out next year, and these curtain-like airbags will deploy from the roof lining located right above the rear window, offering protection to the passenger by surrounding the headrests. Nothing still beats safe driving techniques though, but you can't tell when an accident will strike, can you?
What makes the Griffin Clarifi iPhone 3G case stand apart from the other models in the market is a sliding macro lens which can be flipped into position, helping the iPhone's rather lacklustre camera to capture clearer macro images without investing in an uber expensive lens. While the image quality will not be equal to that of a dedicated digital camera, it is a vast improvement over what the regular iPhone 3G camera is able to cobble together. Just make sure the macro lens remains free from fingerprints before you attempt to snap a close-up image. You can pick up the Griffin Clarifi for $35.

Alps Electric Co. Ltd. has managed to cobble together this 30" production model of a piezoelectric pump that is meant for use in water-cooled notebooks, working despite a narrow refrigerant flow channel. Technical specifications include a no-load flow rate of 140mL/minute while the flow rate stands at under a 10kPa load is 105mL/minute. Water-cooled notebooks, eh? That ought to be some juiced-up portable computer to own, but then again something that runs so fast will probably need to remain tethered to a power outlet frequently since it will sip plenty of juice.

While cell phone camera technology has been getting better and better, who would've thought that they would actually be able to help count infected blood cells without relying on lens optics? That's the discovery boffins from the University of California, Los Angeles managed to do using simple camera phone CCD sensors to distinguish between normal and infected cells in blood samples.
First published in the Royal Society of Chemistry's journal Lab Chip in 2007, the LUCAS technique, developed by UCLA researchers, demonstrated a lens-free method for quickly and accurately counting targeted cell types in a homogenous cell solution. Removing the lens from the imaging process allows LUCAS to be scaled down to the point that it can eventually be integrated into a regular wireless cell phone. Samples could be loaded into a specially equipped phone using a disposable microfluidic chip. The UCLA researchers have now improved the LUCAS technique to the point that it can classify a significantly larger sample volume than previously shown — up to 5 milliliters, from an earlier volume of less than 0.1 ml — representing a major step toward portable medical diagnostic applications.

Scott Davilla, a developper for the ATV-bootloader project, has adapted the AppleTV so people can install Boxee as an AppleTV plugin using an AppleTV's , or atv, bootloader on a USB flash drive.
Boxee is a media center based on XMBC that has a social component: in addition to browse and play media content from the computer or the internet, users can share it with their friends, send them recommendations etc...
The ATVUSB-creator installation is pretty technical and Boxee is still in private alpha, we might be able to get a few invitations for our readers. I did not test either Boxee or the ATV bootloader yet , so for those who already have an access code and want to try it for the AppleTV, read after the jump for the step by step "how-to" (provided by Boxee).
